France Trip, Day #6

Day #6: Lyon, France
This morning we said goodbye to the Provence region and took an early train to Lyon. The trip took us through some beautiful parts of southeastern France. I’m not much of a big-city guy, so when I heard that Lyon is the 2nd largest city in France, I wasn’t all that excited. Doubly so when the train took us through some grungy parts of town on the way in. I was very pleasantly surprised though…what a beautiful city it turned out to be! We spent the day exploring, eating, and photographing our way through the historic old part of town. We even visited an outdoor theater from ancient Roman times. I found the people to be very friendly, and the food exceptional!
Hilly countryside as we neared Lyon
Lyon Part-Dieu train station. You can’t see it here, but there were fully-armed soldiers everywhere, due to the upcoming federal election.
Looking across the Saône River into the old part of the city
There are a number of cool bridges across the Saône River. Some are quite old, others not so much 🙂
More of the old town
Vieux Lyon (old town Lyon) is a joy to wander. Lots of classic French ambience.

The cathedral terrace gives a great view of the city
I’m not much of a city boy, but I really enjoyed this place.
Ancient Roman amphitheatre on the hill overlooking the old town
The intricacy and attention to detail on these old buildings never cease to amaze me
So much ambience!

Pretty hard to beat the view

And it was very good!
